Reno, Nevada

Reno was settled in the early 1850’s in the fertile valley by the Truckee River. In 1868, the first transcontinental railroad passed through Reno and on May 13, 1868, the town was named in honor of Major General Jesse L. Reno, an officer killed in the Civil War. The city’s economy was boosted due to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. In 1931, Nevada legalized casino gambling and has relatively loose divorce laws which has further helped to boost the town’s economy. Today, Reno is still rapidly growing resulting in dramatic increases in housing prices in the area.
Within the city, there are a lot of things to do besides gambling. There is the Nevada Museum of Art, Wingfield Park, Reno Central Library, California Avenue, the University of Nevada Reno, Rancho San Rafael Park, South Wells Avenue, Victorian Square, and Idlewild Park. Some of the great yearly events include the Great Reno Balloon Race, the Reno National Championship Air Races, Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations, Reno Rodeo, Nevada State Fair, Brews & Blues Festival, and the Reno River Festival.
